Volunteer Spotlight Kate Rogers

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Kate Rogers

I genuinely believe that we rise by lifting others. I think one of the best things you can do is look for a community or opportunities where you can help support others. When I was in my bootcamp I started a study group and that helped improve my skills and the people I worked with helped push me to be better. We are still connected, cheer each other on, and share job opportunities with each other.

What is your day job? How did you get started in your field?
Coding Bootcamp Instructional Staff

What kind of education, certifications, training were required to get where you are now?
Full Stack Development Certification

How did you hear about Persevere? What attracted you to the cause and this organization in particular?
A recruiter reached out to my husband several years about about an instructor position. When he told me about the mission it really spoke to my heart. Coding has changed the trajectory of my family and I’m really passionate about sharing what I know to help others do the same. I’ve been volunteering with Persevere for a couple of months and I have worked with the developers in mock interviews as well as a one on one coding mentor. I have also been helping behind the scenes on the digital marketing side.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that this organization does?
I think the continued support once the developers are released is absolutely essential. Having a supportive community that cheers you on and provides tangible help and services goes a long way.

Do you have an anecdote about this cause/organization that really moved you?
I don’t know if this counts but as a relatively new developer looking for full-time employment in the current job market, volunteering has really taken the edge off of the job hunting process for me. In one of the mock interviews I conducted the young lady was doing amazing. It was obvious she prepared and knew what she was talking about. When she didn’t know an answer, she said she was going to do some more research after we spoke. It was a stellar interview. Afterword’s she revealed that she accidentally broke the stress ball she had been holding. I had zero idea that she was that nervous and I would have hired her on the spot. It was a powerful reminder that we all face moments of nervousness and self-doubt, even when we appear confident.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?
I like plants, knitting, video games, planning, and organizing.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would love to go to Norway. I’m really interested in the local cuisine, hikes, and thermal pools.

Do you have any advice you would like to give to the developers as they start into their careers?
I genuinely believe that we rise by lifting others. I think one of the best things you can do is look for a community or opportunities where you can help support others. When I was in my bootcamp I started a study group and that helped improve my skills and the people I worked with helped push me to be better.
