What's truly inspiring about these stories is the resilience and determination demonstrated by individuals who have been given a second chance through education and employment opportunities. It highlights the transformative power of support and opportunity in enabling individuals to turn their lives around and contribute positively to society.

What is your name?

David Aniebo, and I live in Nigeria

What do you do as your day job? How did you get started in your field?

I am a Software Engineer and my day job involves crafting high-performing and scalable solutions that exceed both business and user expectations. My interest in software development started in my second year in school when a course in computer programming and engineering applications was introduced to us. After that, I started taking courses online to highlight my skills and also gain in-depth knowledge about software development.

What kind of education, certificates, training, etc. were required to get to where you are now?

Firstly, My discipline is mechanical engineering, coming from an engineering background introduced me to a lot of concepts in solving real-world problems. I cemented my knowledge in web development using Freecodecamp which gives me access to different certifications like Responsive Web Designs, JavaScript Algorithms and Data Structures.

How did you hear about Persevere? What attracted you to the cause and this org in particular?

I was introduced to Persevere by a colleague who shared their passion for the organization’s mission and the impact it was making in empowering individuals behind prison walls.

I was immediately drawn to Persevere’s commitment to providing comprehensive support to individuals seeking to rebuild their lives. The opportunity to be part of an organization dedicated to making a tangible difference in people’s lives by providing them with opportunities for personal and professional growth was incredibly appealing.

I have been volunteering with Persevere for over a year now. As a volunteer, I have been involved in teaching technical skills to individuals in the programming course, providing mentorship and support as they navigate their educational journey and transition into the workforce. Additionally, I have contributed to organizing and facilitating life-skill classes, helping participants develop essential skills for successful reintegration into society. My experience with Persevere has been incredibly rewarding, witnessing the transformative impact of education and support on individuals’ lives firsthand.

In your opinion, what is the most important work that this organization does?

In my view, the most important work that this organization does is providing individuals behind prison walls with the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and education through their programming courses. By offering a one-year programming course, life-skill classes, support, and transitional housing, Persevere not only equips individuals with technical skills but also helps them develop essential life skills and provides a supportive environment for their reintegration into society.

Furthermore, the creation of Banyan Labs to provide employment opportunities post-release ensures that the impact of Persevere’s work extends beyond education and into tangible career opportunities. By offering real-world experience and opportunities for professional growth, Banyan Labs helps individuals build sustainable careers and achieve long-term success.

Do you have an anecdote about this cause/organization that really moved you?

I’ve encountered numerous stories of individuals who have overcome immense obstacles to pursue education and employment opportunities, particularly those involving prison reform and reintegration programs. One such story that often comes to mind is that of a former inmate who, after completing a programming course similar to the one offered by Persevere, went on to secure a job at a tech company. Despite facing numerous setbacks and societal stigmas, this individual persevered, honed their skills, and ultimately found success in a field that many might have deemed inaccessible to them.

What’s truly inspiring about these stories is the resilience and determination demonstrated by individuals who have been given a second chance through education and employment opportunities. It highlights the transformative power of support and opportunity in enabling individuals to turn their lives around and contribute positively to society.

What other hobbies and interests do you have?

Coding, Reading, Listening to Music, Playing Soccer, Swimming and Working out.

If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

If I were to choose a vacation destination, I’d opt for Japan. The country’s unique blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation fascinates me. Exploring the bustling streets of Tokyo with its neon lights and futuristic technology, wandering through serene temples and gardens in Kyoto, and experiencing the natural beauty of places like Mount Fuji and the Japanese Alps would be incredible.

Japan’s rich cultural heritage, including its art, architecture, and traditional performing arts like kabuki and Noh theater, offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Visiting historical landmarks such as the ancient temples of Nara or the iconic Himeji Castle would provide insights into Japan’s storied past.

Do you have any advice you would like to give to the developers as they start into their careers?

As junior developers embark on their professional journey, it’s important to prioritize the establishment of a strong foundation by mastering the fundamentals of programming. Rather than rushing into advanced techniques or technologies, dedicating time to solidify core concepts will pave the way for long-term success.
