A Program That Transforms Youth, Strengthens Families, and Builds Confidence

With Persevere Tennessee, we want to celebrate the incredible transformation of youth, their parents, and the greater families within their communities. See what two staff members involved in our Families First program have to say among the graduation of the Families First Youth Class of 2024.

“We have seen so many changes happen within the family due to this program, and we are proud of our parents and our youth who have participated.”

Stacey Books, Tennessee State Director

At Persevere Tennessee, we know that true change starts at home. Our West Tennessee youth program has not only equipped young people with technology and life skills, but it has also fostered family reunification—teaching both youth and parents a new language: coding. By creating opportunities for families to learn together, grow together, and communicate in new ways, this program has helped bridge generational gaps and strengthen relationships.

Since its inception, we have witnessed incredible transformations—youth gaining confidence, parents engaging in their children’s education, and families learning to support each other in new and meaningful ways.

Recently, Jabarre Jarrett, our Life Skills Facilitator/Youth Support Specialist, and Tiana Turman, our Youth Instructor, shared reflections on the powerful experiences that have shaped our students and their families. Here they are below!

The Power of Respect: Lessons from a Virtual Talent Show

Section by Jabarre Jarrett – Life Skills Facilitator/Youth Support Specialist

One of our most impactful sessions focused on giving and earning respect, and nothing illustrated this lesson better than our virtual talent show.

Leading up to the event, there was a mix of excitement and hesitation—many students were apprehensive about performing in front of their peers. But through encouragement and support, something remarkable happened.

“Instead of focusing on skill, we chose to celebrate the courage it took to step forward,” shared Jabarre. “I saw kids who used to joke at each other’s expense now cheering each other on. It was a powerful reminder that respect is not about perfection—it’s about showing up for one another.”

When students begin to see their own potential and support each other, those lessons extend into their family lives as well. Parents have reported better communication with their children, a greater sense of teamwork, and an increased appreciation for their child’s hard work and problem-solving skills.

More Than Just Coding: Building Confidence and Family Bonds

Section by Tiana Turman – Youth Instructor

I’ve always wanted to give back to the youth. They are the next generation, and programs like this give them the tools and confidence to succeed. When I had the opportunity to teach kids how to code, I realized I wasn’t just teaching them how to write algorithms or debug loops—I was helping them build problem-solving skills that strengthen their confidence and communication with their families.

I watched students struggle, get frustrated, and doubt themselves, only to persevere, figure things out, and experience that “aha” moment when everything clicked. That’s when a little seed of confidence starts to grow, and they begin to believe in themselves and their abilities.

Here are just a few moments that stood out:

  • Kalil worked tirelessly on his own game. I always knew he had it in him, but seeing his determination and focus pay off was inspiring. Even though class is over, I know he’ll finish what he started.
  • Kayden brought energy and enthusiasm to every challenge. His excitement was contagious and motivated everyone in the class.
  • Benjamin struggled while building an apple catcher game. He became frustrated, but instead of giving up, he pushed through and solved the problem—proving to himself that he could do it.

And the best part? These victories aren’t just happening in class—they’re happening at home, too. Parents are now learning alongside their children, discovering new ways to support and encourage them.

This program has not just been about coding or job skills—it has been about creating a community of respect, perseverance, and growth for both students and their families. As we reflect on its success, we are proud of the youth and parents who have participated and grateful for the impact it has made.

Power to Change: Red Rock AZ Graduation

The power to change starts right now. It’s not waiting for you on the outside. Pain and adversity don’t automatically produce growth—it’s how we respond during those hard times that defines us. This certificate isn’t just a piece of paper—it’s proof that we chose potential over limitations.” – Adrian Ruiz, Red Rock Graduate
